New 9/11 victim identified, almost 16 years later

With the latest determination, the total number of victims identified from the World Trade Center now stands at 1,641, according to data released by the medical examiner.

The office uses DNA testing and other means to match bone fragments to the 2,753 people killed by the hijackers who crashed airplanes into the trade center's twin towers on September 11, 2001.

His name has been withheld at his family's request, the New York City medical examiner's office said.

The man's identity was confirmed through DNA retesting. He is the 1,641 casualty of the 2,753 killed at the lower Manhattan site that day to be recognized; 40 percent of those killed have not had their remaining parts distinguished. Investigators started using new, more successful DNA technology earlier this year to identify them.

Prince Philip retiring: 65 years of service by the numbers
His companion and fellow former marine for 12 years - Norman Saints - agreed, saying Prince Philip had been a good leader. Despite officially retiring, it was revealed Philip "may still attend events alongside The Queen from time to time".

During that time, DNA technology has advanced alongside the multi-million dollar effort to try and connect 21,900 found pieces of remains to the lives they represent. Possible remains of more than 20 victims were recovered.

The 9/11 airliner attacks killed a total of almost 3,000 people in NY, at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., and near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

Investigators were unable to recover scores of bodies trapped in the rubble, and the effects of heat and chemicals like jet fuel have further complicated the identification process.
