Man arrested over British model kidnapped in Italy

A man has been jailed after a British model was attacked in Italy and taken to a remote farmhouse in a suitcase, where she was detained for six days while her captors tried to auction her off online, Italian police have said.

A British model was abducted in Milan and put up for auction online after being lured to a sham photoshoot.

Following the attack, the woman - who can not be named for legal reasons - was put in a duffel bag and taken around 90 miles to Borgial, an isolated village near Turin, before being released on July 17, police say.

The kidnappers then started blackmailing her modelling agency, demanding USD$300,000 (A$377,000) in ransom, Italian authorities said.

The model, who is reportedly in her 20s, travelled from Paris to Milan for the fake photo shoot and was only released by her kidnapper because she was a mother with a young child.

Police said no one took part in auction and it was unclear if Herba was serious about the plan or whether he was a "fantasist".

Milan police officer Lorenzo Bucossi told reporters the group the suspect was allegedly working for offered "mercenary services" on the dark web. It is unclear if she attempted to gather the money.

Upon arriving at the apartment, she was attacked by two men, according to local police.

He has been charged with kidnapping for the purposes of extortion.

Officers went through Herba's phone and computer and said they found photos of the woman and material stating she was for sale, while hair from both the model and Herba was found in the boot of his auto.

It is understood the police investigation involved reconstructing the kidnapping scene and studying CCTV footage from the area.

The woman, whose identity has not been revealed, was held prisoner for a week after being drugged, authorities said.
