Newborn killer whale calf dies, SeaWorld San Antonio announces

The Orlando-based company says 3-month-old Kyara died Monday.

The three-month-old calf was born at the company's San Antonio, Texas, park, and was the last new orca, or killer whale, to be born into SeaWorld's controversial breeding program, CNN reported on Tuesday.

Though the company refrained from offering an official cause of death, pending a postmortem conducted by the veterinarian team, it noted "we know that Kyara had an infection, likely pneumonia". "In addition to monitoring her 24/7, the expert veterinary staff was treating her with antimicrobials, including antibiotics, for any infections she was fighting". They would hand feed her several times in a day so that she got enough nutrients and supplements.

The illness is a common killer of orcas and dolphins, the park said.

Takara got pregnant with Kyara past year when SeaWorld announced that it would end its #killer whale breeding program.

Kyara's mother, Takara, was pregnant when the company announced it was ending its captive breeding programme.

Death threats over Charlie Gard case
The hospital believes that 11-month-old Charlie has suffered irreversible brain damage that treatment can not fix . The case has garnered worldwide attention and even drawn comment from President Donald Trump and Pope Francis.

The post SeaWorld's last baby killer whale to be born in captivity has died appeared first on PBS NewsHour.

Tilikum, which sired 14 calves over almost 25 years in Orlando, died of bacterial pneumonia in January.

In 2010 a trainer was killed by a killer whale in front of an audience and a documentary released in 2013 entitled Blackfish left many criticising the park.

A dedicated team of vets and care staff spent the last three days providing critical care for Kyara, but despite their best efforts the whale passed away.

PETA is also campaigning for the boycott of SeaWorld's parks Tuesday.
