Out-of-nowhere Ostapenko to face Halep for French title

Out-of-nowhere Ostapenko to face Halep for French title

The unseeded world No. 47 has booked a spot in the French Open final with a three-set win over Timea Bacsinszky of Switzerland-oh, and she turned 20 years old today. "I don't know what to expect from her", said Halep, bidding to become just the fifth player to win both the girls' and women's singles titles at Roland Garros.

Overwhelmed by Pliskova's power in the second set, Halep regained the momentum in the decider, frustrating her second-seeded opponent with her ability to soak up punishment. She can pretty much do it all: "she's aggressive, not afraid to come to the net", Pierce said.

Latvia's Jelena Ostapenko celebrates winning her French Open semifinal.

Halep just has to be more consistent with her serve in order for easier matches to take place.

It's the first time a Canadian woman wins a Grand Slam title. The matchup presents a lot of interesting variables, as Ostapenko has already proven that she can play against highly-ranked players.

Logic suggested the steady approach she adopted after losing a topsy-turvy first set in a tiebreak would get the job done for the experienced Swiss, not the white-knuckle rollercoaster tennis Ostapenko was playing.

Halep's semi-final defeat of Pliskova was but the latest display of the potential she brings to the table in her current form, having proved her credentials by taking out another heavyweight of the sport in her penultimate test.

Bacsinszky won the last four games to wrap up the second set 6-3.

Ostapenko - who practiced ballroom dancing when younger - signaled her promise in tennis by winning the Wimbledon juniors in 2014. I won the first set and was very close to making the final and some thoughts were in my mind.

This was the prediction of former two-time Grand Slam champion Mary Pierce, who was speaking to Singapore media by phone from Paris on Thursday evening (8 June), on the same day when the French Open women's semi-finals will be played. However, her attacking style resulted in several winners and unforced errors in equal measure.

Thiem dumped out defending champion Novak Djokovic of Serbia yesterday while Nadal is aiming to win a record 10th title at the French Open.

Ostapenko took out Timea Bacsinszky, 7-6 (4), 3-6, 6-3.

"I was around watching [Martina] Hingis come up and [Steffi] Graf come up and [Monica] Seles come up, and I just see something special in this young lady and the fact that she's so fearless", Evert said of Ostapenko.

"This was my second time, so going forward, I think this can help me build more confidence".

Eurosport is also available via Sky Go can be viewed on a number of platforms including Amazon Fire devices, iPad, Mac computers and laptops, Playstation 3, PS4 and Xbox One. She will meet Ostapenko for the first time in the final on Saturday.
