Trump urges Liberty graduates to be outsiders

Donald Trump will be speaking to students there Saturday morning, and Friday night, University President Jerry Falwell addressed the graduating class to celebrate their achievement.

Mr. Trump has spoken at Liberty University before. It's called the road less traveled.

"Be totally unafraid to challenge entrenched interests and failed power structures", he said, adding with a smile: "Does that sound familiar, by the way?" Relish the opportunity to be an outsider. "Did we take risks?" "I think I did, but we all did". Treat the word "impossible" as nothing more than motivation.

But the president received a warm reception on Saturday from the roughly 50,000 commencement attendees - a record crowd for the university, he proudly declared.

Occasional bright red "Make America Great Again" hats dotted the stands.

Falwell often compared President Trump to his later father, the conservative televangelist Jerry Falwell, and argued that while President Trump wasn't the most religious candidate in the race, he was the man the country needed.

Trump warned attendees of a "broken" government in Washington, D.C.

"You aren't going to let other people tell you what you believe, especially when you know that you're right", the President told the crowd, to intermittent applause. "It's why we proudly proclaim that we are one nation, under God, every time we say the Pledge of Allegiance". Graduates should follow their hearts and their faith for guidance. At another, he told students and parents at the conservative religious school that "nothing is easier or more pathetic than being a critic".

"We are rolling back the job-killing regulations that make it harder for companies to grow and hire in America". Falwell's vision for Liberty changed Lynchburg forever. "I'm standing here looking at the next generation of leaders...there may be the next president or two in your mix".

"Just wait until the world hears the football teams you'll be playing on your schedule starting next season", Trump said.

Students are eagerly anticipating President Trump's upcoming commencement speech at Liberty University, so local residents are stepping in to supply the vitriol.

Before Trump's speech, Falwell in his address commented that Trump's presidency has benefited the Christian community in the USA and presented the president with an honorary Doctorate of Law degree.

"I've been working with his speech writers and I think he's going to deliver a wonderful speech that will be personal to Liberty", Falwell said in the interview.

"UMass, Virginia, Auburn - Jerry are you sure you know what you're doing?"

Nevertheless, Trump compared Liberty to the University of Notre Dame, a Midwestern Catholic college that grew into a football powerhouse.

Trump also praised the military for its battle against the Islamic State and referred at one point to his recent executive order on religious freedom. However, he said the president will be able to do more good if he "puts America before himself".
