Standalone Google VR headsets coming from HTC and Lenovo

HTC Vive is developing a standalone virtual reality (VR) headset powered by the Google Daydream platform, Google revealed at the latest iteration of its annual Google I/O developer conference that started several hours ago in Mountain View.

Each device features WorldSense positional tracking for accurate movement representation, and also uses Tango-based tracking technology to enable these wonderful experiences.

Microsoft has touted inside-out tracking in its HoloLens and other third-party Windows VR headsets as a key differentiator from the competition.

Those prior Daydream devices, which relied on typical smartphones, can only track the rotation of your head.

Furthermore, the device comes laden with Android 7.0 Nougat based TouchWiz UI and supports Samsung Pay. The Galaxy Note 7R is expected to carry a 3,200mAh battery, lower than the Galaxy Note 7's 3,500mAh.

Meanwhile, Google has been steadily building up its collection of tools for creating VR content.

And phones can be underpowered for certain VR experiences, and computer-based VR, like HTC Vive and Oculus Rift, require fairly expensive computers to run VR content and apps.

While major details about the headset are unclear, the announcement ties together a lot of Google's recent VR acquisitions and makes the company a more notable player in the VR space. Now, this isn't the first time we've heard of a standalone VR headset from Google. The headsets are slated for release later in the year.

Google said the standalone Daydream HMD should offer a better experience compared to smartphone-derived VR hardware. "Just pick it up, put it on and be fully immersed in your new reality".

Google is also adding VR and AR support for the Google Expedition, its initiative for the Education sector.
