President Trump Is Confident That Israel And Palestine Will Find Peace

Donald Trump has said he does not think brokering peace in the Middle East will be as hard as people think.

Plans are being made for Trump to visit Netanyahu in Jerusalem later this month, and possibly meet Abbas in the West Bank, the Reuters news agency reported on Wednesday.

Abbas' White House talks followed a February visit by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who moved to reset ties after a combative relationship with the Republican president's predecessor, Democrat Barack Obama.

Trump stressed that he is personally committed to helping the Israelis and Palestinians achieve a comprehensive peace, and that any peace settlement can only be the product of direct negotiations between the Israelis and Palestinians.

"Let's prove them wrong", Trump said.

Trump even extended another possible invite to Abbas in "welcoming him back as a great marker of progress and, ultimately, toward the signing of a document with the Israelis and with Israel toward peace".

But he also said outsiders can not impose terms on the parties - which some see as a coded warning that there are limits to the US willingness to invest political capital.

Samir Awad, a political science professor at Beir Zeit University in the West Bank, said visiting the White House to present Palestinian views and express their readiness for peace "is a good thing".

But according to former White House official Dennis Ross, Trump is in some ways helping Abbas by extending the White House invite.

Speaking through a translator, Abbas echoed Trump's upbeat tone: "We believe that we can be true partners to you to bring about a historic peace under your stewardship".

That move would likely spark Palestinian fury and is privately seen by many in the Israel and United States security establishments as needlessly inflammatory.

USA officials said ahead of the meeting that Trump would press Abbas to end payments to families of Palestinians imprisoned in Israeli jails.

Abbas spoke to his American counterpart of the two-state solution, the commitment to peace and security and a better future for Palestinians and Israelis.

But under pressure at home to avoid major concessions, the 82-year-old leader said: "It's about time for Israel to end its occupation", referring to Jewish settlement building in the West Bank.

He warned that Trump's vision of resolving the conflict might be close to the Israeli vision "which might drop the option of the two-state solution".

"An honor to host President Mahmoud Abbas at the WH today", read the tweet. "There is no reason there's not peace between Israel and the Palestinians - none whatsoever".

The senior adviser, however, said that Trump's invitation to Abbas was a good starting point between the Palestinian Authority and the new USA administration and expressed his appreciation for the respectful approach of the president in an attempt to renew the peace process.
