Polarizing Milwaukee sheriff denies CNN report that he plagiarized

Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke faces a new investigation after accusations that the controversial sheriff plagiarized portions of his 2013 master's thesis.

Sources that CNN allege Clarke plagiarized include: the 9/11 Commission Report, a myriad of studies from the American Civil Liberties Union, reports from various think tanks and even former President George W. Bush's post-White House memoir "Decision Points". In his thesis, "Making U.S. security and privacy rights compatible", Clarke failed to properly attribute his sources at least 47 times.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported that Clarke said in an email to the paper, "Only someone with a political agenda would say this is plagiarism".

Milwaukee Sheriff David Clarke's alleged instances of plagiarism in his master's thesis from 2014 in security issues, might have cost him a job as an assistant secretary with the Department of Homeland Security, if he was even offered the job in the first place.

Hours after the CNN report went live, the Naval Postgraduate School removed Clarke's report from its online collection of thesis and dissertations, according to the New York Daily News. Like many other institutions of higher education, the Naval Postgraduate School considers this practice a form of plagiarism because it creates the impression that language used in the source is actually the author's.

"Guy is a sleaze bag'" he tweeted.

Stewart said the CNN reporter is "attacking" Clarke "with fake stories nitpicking words".

The vocal Trump surrogate announced on Thursday that he got the appointment to the DHS "office of partnership and programs".

For years, Clarke has been a favorite of conservative media and campaigned for President Trump during the 2016 election.

A spokesman for Clarke confirmed to The Post that the sheriff will step down to be appointed to the position, which he expects to begin sometime in June.

Clarke is known for his eyebrow-raising comments, including calling Black Lives Matter a hate group and calling the organization "Black Lies Matter". Seven workers at the county jail he oversees are at the center of a criminal investigation into the dehydration death previous year of an inmate who prosecutors say was deprived of water as punishment.

Milwaukee County Supervisor Peggy West, a critic of Sheriff Clarke, says she shook her head when she heard he would be moving to a federal agency.

Clarke's office has come under scrutiny over four deaths that have occurred in his jail since 2016, including an incident in which an inmate gave birth to a stillborn baby.
