Nicky Hayden Suffering From Serious Cerebral Damage: Prognosis

The hospital confirmed on Thursday that Hayden suffered "a serious polytrauma with subsequent serious cerebral damage".

Former MotoGP champion Nicky Hayden has been hospitalised on Thursday after colliding with a auto.

He won the MotoGP championship in 2006 and has been competing for Team Honda in the Superbike category since previous year.

Hayden, who was in Italy following a race at nearby Imola, was transported to a local hospital following the incident on the Rimini coast, before being transferred to Cesena.

The 35-year-old American, who now races for the Red Bull Honda World Superbike team, was hurt while on a training exercise along the Rimini coastline when his bicycle was hit by a auto.

"The clinical conditions of Nicky Hayden, hospitalized on Wednesday, May 17, remain extremely serious in the hospital resuscitation department of the Bufalini hospital in Cesena", a statement read.

However, it turns out the role of the gum-chewing White House Press Secretary nearly went to an entirely different person. In a pathos-inducing sequence, Spicer scours the streets of New York City on a motorized podium searching for his pal.

His Honda team said that as well as having his fiancée Jackie by his side, Hayden has now been joined by his brother Tommy and mother Rose who arrived in Italy from the United States earlier Thursday.

Valentino Rossi said: "It's a great shame because Nicky is a great rider for sure, a great talent, a world champion and always at the top, but especially a very good guy".

"Nicky is one of the best friends I have had in the paddock", said the Italian, who lost the 2006 title to his friend by just five points.

His career high so far came in 2006 when he won his only MotoGP championship. He competed in Moto GP from 2003-2015.

Below are tweets from his former teammate Casey Stoner, reigning world champion Marc Marquez, Ducati rider Jorge Lorenzo and others praying for the American rider's quick recovery.

"Hayden was involved in a training accident whilst cycling in Italy".
