Workers install a bronze statue of Dodgers legend Jackie Robinson outside Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles.
On April 15, 1947, Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in Major League Baseball when he started at first base for the Brooklyn Dodgers.
The second-year shortstop, who signed a six-year, $25 million contract with the Sox during spring training, said he draws inspiration from Robinson and in turn wants to inspire children from Chicago. Over the following 12 seasons, eight of the National League MVP awards were won by black men.
"It's not about looking back so much as it is feeling inspired", Sharon Robinson said. Lyle Spatz, editor of a book about that Dodgers' team, notes that Pete Reiser was the hero of the day, and The New York Times' game story gave Robinson's piece of sport-changing history only passing mention.

With the right personnel - which he has in Harden and his Rockets teammates - Mike D'Antoni's offense produces video-game numbers. He is a freak, no doubt, but this performance has totally diminished Harden's similarly stellar triple-double abilities.
Tomorrow's statue will be revealed in the left field reserve plaza. Weighing in at over 700 pounds, the statue will be secured with a steel rod and is said to have three quotes chosen by Robinson's family.

Jackie Robinson's contributions both to the game and society will not be forgotten. He used to come home and say, 'I got a standing ovation today.' He'd be shocked. Here's a sampling of the many ways in which teams and players paid tribute to the great Jackie Robinson on Saturday. "My dad was a humble person and here he is 70 years later being recognized". I get to wear a pair of custom Jackie Robinson cleats by New Balance.
Unlike other events or museums, which display Robinson's impact on sports and American culture, the BHCS is like a living, breathing exhibit.
