Tamp Bay Rays starting pitcher Chris Archer limited the New York Yankees to two runs over seven innings as the Rays beat the Yankees 7-3 on Opening Day.
CC Sabathia is scheduled to start Tuesday in the second game of the series against the Rays, with Michael Pineda slated for Wednesday and Luis Severino on the mound when NY takes on Baltimore on Friday.
Fade: Chris Archer struggled throughout last season and he draws a tough matchup on Opening Day against a lefty-heavy Yankees lineup. Instead, Tanaka didn't even last three innings.
With two outs and the bases loaded, Grichuk lined a 1-2 pitch into the gap in left-center for his second career game-ending hit. He's 2-0 against the Rays in three road starts over the last two seasons.
Masahiro Tanaka has been the bright spot for the Yankees for the past few seasons and one of the better starters in the rotation, today was not his day, the question is how long until this year is not his year? "And I think if we stay healthy and just play our game we have a chance to succeed, just like anybody else".
Regardless, Tanaka hardly was the lone culprit in the Yanks' latest 0-1 start. Tanaka, who had baseball's lowest ERA in spring training, was tagged for a career-worst seven earned runs in 2 2/3 innings. One inning into the new season, the Spring Training juggernaut Yankees were down 3-0. His 0.38 ERA and 1.18 K/9, which is significantly higher than his career 0.91 K/9, had people wondering if he could take the next step this season and contend for the CY Young.
The Yankees won 11 of 19 games against the Rays in 2016, though Tampa Bay won five of the nine meetings at Tropicana Field.
Sunderland on brink of the drop after Watford defeat
Pickford; Jones, O'Shea (c), Kone, Oviedo; Denayer, Gibson (Ndong, 62'), Rodwell, Borini, Januzaj (Khazri, 70'); Defoe. A second-half goal from Miguel Britos earns Watford a 1-0 victory over struggling Sunderland at Vicarage Road.
Overall, Tanaka just never really looked like himself on the mound.
At Busch Stadium in Missouri, Koji Uehara, who joined World Series champion the Chicago Cubs in the offseason, yielded one walk and one hit but did not allow the St. Louis Cardinals to score during one inning of relief. Cash is considering moving right-handed batting Steven Souza Jr.to the top of the order against left-handers, beginning Tuesday against CC Sabathia. We're going to set it off right, we're going to strike out a lot of people today.
The fact that Tampa Bay jumped on Tanaka early is arguably the most surprising part.
This marks the 20th season for the Rays. After allowing four first inning runs total last season - four! - he allowed three in the first inning Sunday.
That doesn't take the sting out of Tanaka's start on Sunday. Maybe the extra adrenaline or pressure to help his team get off to a fast start gets to him. As manager Joe Girardi would say, it's not what you want.
Diamondbacks: RHP Jake Barrett, who could be the setup man in the bullpen, opened the season on the 10-day DL due to right shoulder inflammation. He's still been respectable, but he owns a 5.59 ERA, giving up six earned runs in 9.2 innings.
Not the way you wanna start the season, Masahiro!
