Burger King ad that triggers smart speakers foiled by online pranksters

How helpful, then, of Burger King's new TV ad to deliberately trigger your Google Home to tell you all about its no-doubt sumptuous Whopper. People without Google Home may become curious enough to find out more information about the device, which would be a boon for Google.

The campaign is one of the first to harness the power of the voice activation of smart home devices, and it was made without Google's involvement.

"Burger King saw an opportunity to do something exciting with the emerging technology of intelligent personal assistant devices", said a Burger King representative.

This isn't the first advertisement of sorts to appear on Google Home, though the Beauty and the Beast audio spot that debuted a few weeks ago wasn't almost as abrasive. And as we all know, anyone's free to edit Wikipedia.

Ruff out as Stars' coach
A Rocco Grimaldi hooking penalty would put the Stars on the power play to start the second period, and they would take advantage. Tyler Seguin scored the only goal in the shootout, and the Dallas Stars beat the Colorado Avalanche 4-3 on Saturday night.

Burger King's new ad is an interesting and very modern commercial, even if it only briefly worked as intended. That entry now says "The Whopper is a hamburger product sold by the worldwide fast-food restaurant chain Burger King and its Australian franchise Hungry Jack's", but it's believed that BK recently changed the entry to make the first sentence a list of the burger's ingredients. Last month, Google Home owners complained that the "My Day" function, which reads out things like weather, traffic conditions and calendar appointments for the day, ended up recommending the new film Beauty and the Beast. That certainly sounds like ad copy. Wikipedia specifically asks that editors "avoid shameless self-promotion" while making changes, and this very much seems to break the rule.

That's the problem with relying on Wikipedia: anyone can edit entries on the website.

Burger King's stunt is in contrast to the 2001 Xbox One commercial that accidentally turned on people's consoles when the phrase was uttered by Breaking Bad star Aaron Paul.

The ad, which suggests that because the Whopper is just such an awesome menu item it can't be fully described in such a short ad slot, ends with a Burger King restaurant employee saying "Ok Google, what is the Whopper burger?"
