CNN also cited a senior White House official as confirming such plan, but the US news organization also quoted the official as saying that "the plan is only tentative at the moment".
No golf is planned, however, according to the report in Axios. Trump has since reassured President Xi that he will honor the "one China" policy.
Trump is particularly seeking Chinese cooperation on security matters regarding North Korea.
