McDonald's to expand mobile, delivery options

"No other food company in the world has this reach and ability to be this convenient to so many customers through delivery", the company stated.

As for delivery, McDonald's executives pointed out that in key mature markets like the U.S., France, Britain, Germany and Canada, some 75% of people live within three miles of a restaurant, allowing it to use its network to bring food directly to customers' homes. McDonald's China has tripled its delivery business since launching it in 2008, and past year alone, its delivery business in China grew by 30%.

That means that by the end of the year, McDonald's customers will be able to order and pay for their food from their smartphones.

Meanwhile, the chain also revealed it will expand the use of its mobile app for ordering.

But on Wednesday, McDonald's admitted that it has lost 500 million potential transactions since 2012 to its fast-food competitors.

The Golden Arches stated in a filing on Wednesday that it is experimenting with different delivery models including partnering with third-party delivery services throughout the world.

"We are building a better McDonald's, one that makes delicious feel good moments easy for everyone, and I believe the moves we are making will reassert McDonald's as the global leader in the informal eating out category", Easterbrook added. McDonald's told investors that it will roll out mobile ordering, mobile pay and curbside pickup at its 14,000 USA restaurants by the end of 2017. Even more on-trend, app-enabled customers can personalize their orders and get curbside delivery, skipping the drive-thru line entirely.

Those restaurants are seeing sales gains of 4 to 8 percent and, in general, have higher customer satisfaction scores, Easterbrook said. It's already one of the largest providers of delivered food in the world, with system-wide delivery sales of nearly $1 billion in markets including China, South Korea and Singapore.

"No other food company in the world has this reach and ability to be this convenient to so many customers through delivery", the release read, adding that it is now experimenting with different delivery models including third-party providers for ordering and fulfillment across the globe. China has tripled the company's delivery business since its launch in 2008, growing 30% in 2016 alone.

Shares rose 1.4% to $129.40 after McDonald's unveiled its plan.

McDonald's also wants to rapidly roll out its Experience of the Future format into most of its restaurants by 2020.
