Cuomo And Schumer Denounce Acts Of Anti-Semitism Against JCCs

Outdoor enthusiasts and activists from across NY have gathered in Albany to urge state lawmakers to back Gov. Andrew Cuomo's plan for a 750-mile trail system.

Cuomo says NY has been a leader in the movement since 1848 when it hosted the first-ever Women's Rights Convention in Seneca Falls.

"New York must always be the beacon of tolerance and hope for all, and with the recent explosion of anti-Semitism and hate crimes, it is more important than ever before that we do everything in our power to ensure the safety and equal treatment of all New Yorkers", Cuomo said while announcing the new initiatives.

"But I also want to assure the Jewish community that the people of the state of NY speak with one voice in condemning this activity", he said.

"And every person in the state of NY with any decency and understanding of what it means to be a New Yorker stands with you at this moment, and we speak with one voice condemning this repugnant behavior and we stand arm-in-arm with the Jewish community through this time of hardship".

The governor has been a vocal supporter of Israel, traveling there in August of 2014.

On Wednesday, the New York Police Department said anti-Semitic incidents are up 94 percent in New York City over this time a year ago.

Cuomo's direction comes a day after he appeared in Albany to decry bomb threats called into Jewish Community Centers across the country, including two threats to the Albany JCC.

"With this ugliness that is going on, it's our obligation to stand up and to speak loudly against it", Cuomo said. "Your courage is a strength to all of us".

N.Y. Gov. Cuomo called for the State Police to investigate the desecration. "If anything it seems like it's getting worse". "This is repugnant to everything we believe as New Yorkers".

Szegedin said that the rise of anti-Semitic acts throughout the state was point of discussion and is a concern for Kiryas Joel. "NY is and always has been a place that celebrates diversity and religious tolerance, and we say to all New Yorkers who feel unsafe - we will always protect you".

The New York State Police have been given additional resources, the governor said, and a special investigative unit has been put together under Superintendent George Beach to work with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and local police.

The state is also offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the prosecution of those responsible for bomb threats.
