Mark Zuckerberg Responds to the Rise of Trumpism

Zuckerberg also wrote about the spread of information on Facebook, such as that of "fake news" and sensational, misleading articles.

"Progress now requires humanity coming together not just as cities or nations, but also as a global community", he wrote.

The anti-globalization movement has taken hold in other countries as well, with the United Kingdom voting to withdraw from the European Union and rightist Marine LePen showing a strong chance of becoming France's next president.

In a post titled "Building Global Community", Zuckerberg wrote to the social network's users in an over 5,700-word post, which is being described as his mission statement.

At our current pace of research, we hope to begin handling some of these cases in 2017, but others will not be possible for many years, the Facebook CEO noted. "Across the world there are people left behind by globalization, and movements for withdrawing from global connection", he said.

The letter - more a manifesto, really - delves into each of these subjects at length, all of which center on the idea of using the global Internet community as a positive force. He said such misinformation increases polarization between beliefs. "The best solutions for improving discourse may come from getting to know each other as whole people instead of just opinions - something Facebook may be uniquely suited to do".

Scott Pruitt, Trump's environment pick, gets Senate approval
They are are elected to represent their constituents' best interests, but instead voted to protect corporate greed. Pruitt as the attorney general in Oklahoma has sued the EPA and said he curtailed the agency's regulatory reach.

"We can help establish direct dialogue and accountability between people and our elected leaders", Zuckerberg added.

Finally, Zuckerberg said Facebook wants to build a more inclusive community that brings its users into the decision-making process for the social network. This is another area where critics say Facebook has failed its users time and again. "Since the vast majority of news is now being read through devices, and through services that are provided through those devices, then I do think that we all have a responsibility for it", he said. When in doubt, we always favor giving people the power to share more. He also addressed numerous criticisms Facebook has recently faced, including the prevalence of fake news and harmful content on the site, as well as its role in cases of possible terrorism, natural disasters and other issues.

Zuckerberg, who in recent months has been taking a more active role in civic affairs, announced in 2015 that he and his wife Priscilla Chan would donate 99 percent of their Facebook wealth - an estimated $45 billion - to philanthropic causes.

In a wide-ranging post of almost 6,000 words, Zuckerberg said Facebook can play a role in bringing people together as they face fractious politics and anti-globalization sentiment.

One thing Facebook will try to do is suggest "meaningful communities".
