Former EPA employees urge Senate to oppose Pruitt

Democrats in the Senate have objected not only to Pruitt's poor environmental record, but also his failure to provide information in response to questions.

The Republican action last week overcame a boycott by Democrats on the environment committee, who strongly objected to Pruitt's poor record.

Around 30 employees at EPA's Chicago office joined a protest organized by the Sierra Club and the American Federation of Government Employees to protest Oklahoma Attorney General Scott Pruitt's nomination.

The biggest issue the group appears to have is with Pruitt's apparent close ties with the fossil fuels industry and that there is "no evidence" he has taken the initiative "to protect and advance public health and environmental protection in his state". Pruitt, the Oklahoma attorney general, was one of a group of 21 state attorneys general that supported a lawsuit filed by the AFBF and the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau that alleged the EPA exceeded its authority in relation to the Chesapeake Bay cleanup, the AFBF said in an article on its website.

Australians Protest Trump Refugee Ban in the Thousands
Australia's offshore detention camps have often been criticized by the United Nations watchdogs for harsh conditions. Under a longstanding policy, Australia mandates offshore detention centers for asylum-seekers who arrive by boat.

If a freshman congressman from Florida has his way, the Environmental Protection Agency will be no more.

Even though the EPA was created under Richard Nixon, the agency's employees have clashed in the past with Republican leaders, particularly under the Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush administrations.

Pruitt is sceptical about the causes and impacts of climate change and has repeatedly sued the EPA in an attempt to overturn a wide range of environmental and climate rules. Additionally, the newly elected Senator, who handily beat Mark Kirk in the November 2016 election, said she was "troubled" by statements Devos made regarding the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. In an email obtained by The Huffington Post, Gaetz clarified that "as conservatives, we must understand that states and local communities are best positioned to responsibly regulate the environmental assets within their jurisdictions". A key official helping with the Trump transition has suggested the agency's workforce be cut from about 15,000 employees to 5,000. He's introduced a bill to abolish the EPA entirely - something that might seem counterintuitive for a politician from Florida considering a good chunk of the state is expected to be under water in nine years due to rising ocean levels.
