GM begins testing autonomous cars on Michigan public roads

The rides will eventually expand to metro Detroit.

GM has been accelerating its efforts to deploy self-driving cars, earlier this year buying autonomous driving startup Cruise Automation.

Separately, Barra declined to comment on President-elect Donald Trump's desire to renegotiate the U.S.'s One China Policy, which recognizes Beijing as the sole capital of the country despite Taiwan's claims to independence.

Autonomous Bolts will be assembled at GM's plant in Orion Township, Mich. The Michigan legislation, which Fortune called "the most permissive self-driving auto laws in the country", allows the testing of autonomous vehicles without drivers, steering wheels or pedals. Autonomous testing is already underway on GM's Technical Center campus in Warren, Michigan. "Our autonomous technology will be reliable and safe, as customers have come to expect from any of our vehicles".

The Michigan testing is clear to proceed after state governor Rick Snyder signed into law legislation that allows expanded testing of autonomous vehicles on public roads by companies and organizations.

Obama blocks states from defunding Planned Parenthood
We are working tirelessly on Capitol Hill to convince Congress to block this regulation under the Congressional Review Act. Both the Senate and House passed such a reconciliation proposal almost a year ago, but Obama vetoed the bill in January.

"Revolutionizing transportation for our customers while improving safety on roads is the goal of our autonomous vehicle technology, and today's announcement gets us one step closer to making this vision a reality", said General Motors Chairman and CEO Mary Barra in a news release. General Motors has been testing self-driving cars in those two markets since June, and it now operates about 40 vehicles split between the two cities.

In June, GM began testing autonomous Chevrolet Bolt EVs on the public roads in San Francisco and Scottsdale. That's where non-autonomous all-electric Bolts are already being built, along with the Chevy Sonic subcompact vehicle. Proponents, including GM, say the law puts MI in the driver's seat for self-driving autonomous technology, testing and deployment.

Workers in the Orion plant will add technology including radar, laser sensors and cameras to some of the Bolts to create the autonomous vehicles.

The Bolt EV autonomous research vehicles will be sent to San Francisco and Scottsdale, Arizona, as well.

But to be fair, we expected something like this following last week's announcement. The company did say earlier this year that self-driving Bolts will be used for ride-hailing services through its partnership with Lyft within a few years.
