Senior journalist Gauri Lankesh's killing condemned

"Saddened at the killing of journalist Gauri Lankesh in Bengaluru".

Activists in the city too prayed for Lankesh saying that they could relate to her ordeal, as they were of the opinion that there is no safety for people who raise their voice against any issue.

What is known so far about the murder of Gauri Lankesh is this: Late Tuesday night, unidentified assailants fired at Lankesh outside her home in an up-scale residential suburb of Bengaluru; her neighbours claim they heard the shots but thought they were crackers; one of them discovered her body on the doorway to her residence and called the police.

But critics of Modi's government say dissent is being stifled as nationalist sentiment grows in the world's largest democracy. In Ahmedabad, 200 people, including journalists, gathered at Gandhi Ashram in Sabarmati area in defence of freedom of expression, said Gujarat Media Club President Darshan Desai.

Press Club of Bengaluru president Sadashiva Shenoy, who was closely associated with Gauri, said, "divisive forces can not muzzle the liberal voices by resorting to killing".

A year ago she was found guilty of defaming a lawmaker from Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in a 2008 article about alleged corruption.

Police say boat with Rohingya capsized, 5 dead
His statements come when Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on a three-day visit to Myanmar, where Rohingyas are facing persecution. In the aftermath of that violence, sporadic attacks against Muslims occurred in other parts of Myanmar, also known as Burma.

In a statement, it said Lankesh's murder "fits into a by now familiar pattern of eliminating voices that dare to speak out against the current climate of hate and intolerance by the RSS and BJP".

"If people like him can not maintain the dignity of PM, then think of how we have an army of lunatics among us - they will "beat" you when you are alone and will do so in public too", Ravish Kumar wrote.

Union minister Ananth Kumar said the state government should probe the murder and arrest the killers.

The JFA urged the Karnataka Chief Minister and also a senior Congress leader Siddaramaiah, who had already condemned her murder, to take necessary initiatives to nab the culprits at the earliest. "The BJP, the central government or any organisation related to us has no relation with this incident", Union minister Nitin Gadkari said.

"Apart from handing over Ganapathy's case to CBI, the court commented on the investigation process of state government".
