Modi meets Suu Kyi

Burmese leader Aung San Suu Kyi has said her Government is protecting everyone in Rakhine state and that "terrorists" were behind an "iceberg of misinformation" about the Rohingya crisis.

"When it comes to finding a solution to a special issue, we hope that all stakeholders can work together towards finding a peaceful solution which while respecting the unity and territorial integrity of Myanmar", he said.

Prime Minister Modi held wide-ranging talks with Myanmar's State Counsellor Suu Kyi and announced gratis visas for people of Myanmar and promised to release the 40 Myanmarese citizens, lodged in Indian jails.

India and Myanmar were also looking at strengthening existing cooperation in areas of security and counter- terrorism, trade and investment, infrastructure and energy, and culture, Modi had said ahead of his visit.

The Myanmar's president Htin Kyaw and Suu Kyi had visited India a year ago. China wields influence with several of the militant groups that Suu Kyi has tried to bring to a dialogue with the government - giving it leverage in Myanmar's peace process that India can't match.

Washington rejects the proposal; Putin insisted it "offers a genuine way to defuse the tensions and a step-by-step settlement". Yesterday the South's military launched a volley of ballistic missiles simulating an attack on the North's nuclear test site.

Thousands of Rohingyas are crossing over into Bangladesh - where they are sparingly given refugee status - to escape from the violence in Rakhine state. The Prime Minister had in the meantime visited every other neighbour - except the politically unstable Maldives - for bilateral meetings.

# India is seen as a thought leader on the global stage.

The MoU was signed by Justice Chandramauli Kumar Prasad, Chairman, Press Council of India, and U Aung Hla Tun, First Vice-Chairman, Myanmar Press Council, at the Presidential Palace in Nay Pyi Taw. Union minister Kiren Rijiju on Tuesday said Rohingyas are illegal immigrants and will be deported. But India's familiar Achilles heel - a delay in delivering on promises - has hurt its efforts in Myanmar too.

"We have a long border with Myanmar (1643-kilometer-long) where we have security concerns, there are certain insurgents groups from India that find shelters across this border", Misri told ANI in an exclusive interview. He had visited the country in 2014 to attend the ASEAN-India Summit.
