CVS Sets 7-Day Limit On Opioid Prescriptions

CVS Pharmacy will limit opioid prescriptions to a seven-day supply for certain conditions, as part of its efforts to fight the national opioid abuse epidemic.

In a statement Thursday, the company, with around 9,700 retail locations, noted that the program will include limiting to seven days the supply of opioids dispensed for certain acute prescriptions for patients who are new to therapy.

This new plan follows the CDC's recommendation that pharmacists contact doctors when they receive prescriptions that are asking for more medication than what's needed for the typical recovery time.

CVS pharmacists will also require immediate-release formulations of opioids before extend-release ones, lowering the tolerance risk to highly addictive medications.

CVS, - which was the first large retail pharmacy chain to stop selling cigarettes in 2014 - manages medications for almost 90 million customers at 9,700 retail locations.

The Indian shuttler then defeated Thailand's Nitchaon Jindapol in a closely-contested 22-20, 21-17 second round match. In the third game, another close battle ensued as both finalists continued to commit several unforced errors.

None of the opioid limits apply to patients with cancer, according to a CVS Health spokesperson.

In 2015, 52,000 people died from drug overdose-33,000 of those were from opioids alone. Five percent of adults surveyed told the National Institute on Drug Abuse researchers they took opioids without their doctor's permission - often getting the prescription meds for free from friends or relatives.

"In particular at King's Daughters, we're working on a non-narcotic pain regimen or pain control regimen that we can offer our patients when they are in the hospital that can reduce the amount of medication they can get while they're inpatients and as outpatients". More than 100 metric tons of unwanted medication, that could otherwise have been diverted, misused or abused, have been collected and safely disposed of through this program in the past two years.

CVS said it provides medications to almost 90 million people, so the company is hoping to take the lead and influence other providers to follow suit.
