Community reacts to Saudi women drivers

"Women should obviously have had the right to drive a long time ago -? the fact that this decision was so long in coming shows just how much has changed in Saudi Arabia with Prince Mohammed now wielding executive authority", said Perry Cammack, a fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. She believes this new law, that will take effect June 2018, is empowering for all women, including in our state.

Champions of the women's rights movement have a new reason to celebrate.

"The royal decree will implement the provisions of traffic regulations, including the issuance of driving licenses for men and women alike", the Saudi Press Agency said.

Saudi Arabia, the birthplace of Islam, had been widely criticised for being the only country in the world that barred female motorists, a tradition seen by rights activists as emblematic of Riyadh's repression of women.

There was some opposition online, however, with some men criticising the decision on Twitter under the slogan "the people refuse women driving".

The Somali president, accompanied by government officials, also held meetings with the Saudi crown prince Mohamed Bin Salman in Jeddah and they discussed issues including economic partnership among others. For example, the police will have to be trained to interact with women in a way that they rarely do in Saudi Arabia, a society where men and women who are not related have little contact.

He is such an important player for us. "We have a very good communication with the doctor, physio, sports science, coaching staff to try to help him".

Despite this announcement, Saudi women will not be able to drive immediately.

It was unclear whether women would require their guardian's permission to apply for a driving licence.

One Saudi woman tweeted a picture of three women in a convertible going shopping, with the message: "Us soon".

A middle- to upper-class Saudi family typically has two vehicles, one driven by the man of the house and a second auto in which a full-time chauffeur transports his wife and children. This means every country in the world now allows women the right to drive.

According to the clerics, the majority of Council members saw no problem with women driving as long as there were guarantees and laws to maintain the respect and dignity of women, Efe reported. That women are being allowed to help support themselves right now is awfully convenient - part of careful manoeuvring by the House of Saud, which wants to ease the country toward private employment while managing the demands for social change that will bring.
