Brigham Young University ends Mormon ban on caffeinated soda

In news that will brighten your Friday, students at Brigham Young University are celebrating today as the school announced that they have ended their ban on selling caffeinated sodas.

The church, officially known as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, directs members to generally avoid alcohol and beverages such as coffee and tea as part of an 1833 revelation from Mormon founder Joseph Smith.

The Statesman reports that while the Utah campus can cash in on sales of soft drinks at sporting events at the school, the Rexburg campus doesn't have athletic programs and the economic incentive isn't there.

BYU's students are raving about the Mormon school's dining services development on Twitter, saying goodbye to the days they had to bring their own carbonated contraband to campus. Energy drinks, however, will not be sold.

Yes, the BYU community drank to their hearts' content.

Even before this change, there was at least one way to get a Coke on campus.

"It's a big day because we can finally drink on campus what we're allowed to drink in real life", said Jepsen, a 1994 graduate.

Brigham Young University is the largest Mormon college in the United States, boasting 33,363 total enrollment in 2016, meaning that this announcement has made a lot of people very happy.

"Did I just buy the first-ever caffeinated Coke Zero Sugar sold in #BYU's Wilkinson Student Center?" he tweeted.

"Caffeinated soft drinks have never been banned from campus", she said.
