US Military Allowed To Shoot Down Drones

"Protecting our force remains a top priority, and that's why DoD issued the specific, but classified policy developed with the Federal Aviation Administration and our interagency partners that details how DoD personnel may counter the unmanned aircraft threat", Navy Captain Jeff Davis said. The Pentagon has recently signed off on a new policy that will allow military bases to shoot down drones that trespass on their property.

The Pentagon has authorized secret rules of engagement for dealing with private and commercial drones found flying over or around any of 133 domestic military bases.

Drones have rapidly grown in popularity in the United States, and the FAA in March estimated the market would grow from about 1.1 million small personal drones in 2016 to more than 3.5 million by 2021.

In 2015, officials from the US military, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and the FAA gathered at the DHS headquarters in Arlington, Virginia, to discuss the potential use of hobbyist drones by terrorists or assassins. The policy specifically applies to drones that it says are potential "threats", but the military didn't say when or how a drone becomes a threat. Specific guidelines on the proper use of drones are listed on the FAA website, he pointed out.

Fire breaks out in Dubai Tower block
The Dubai Media Office said the fire "has been brought under control", adding that "cooling operations are underway". An investigation by Torch Tower's management found that most of the damage from the 2015 fire was to the cladding.

In recent weeks, the Islamic State militant group (ISIS) has used drones to attack U.S. Special Operations soldiers and disrupt airstrikes near the Syrian city of Raqqa, its remaining stronghold in the country, as well as to attack forces battling to oust it from Iraq. That announcement didn't say anything about the military reserving the right to obliterate or intercept drones, however.

What Caused the U.S. Army to Create This New Policy?

Prominent locations including the Pentagon and Washington are already "no drone zones".
