Manchester City in shock move for former Red Devil defender

West Bromwich Albion have turned down a £18m bid from Manchester City for defender Jonny Evans, according to the Guardian.

Evans made 198 appearances for United, with whom he won 10 trophies.

Evans has two years remaining on his current contract at The Hawthorns and West Brom appear determined to hold on to a player for whom they rejected a £10m offer from Leicester earlier in the summer.

He is comfortable with the ball at his feet - a major asset in any Guardiola team - and plays on the left side defence where City don't now have a natural fit.

It is unclear how much a move to Manchester City appeals to the former Manchester United defender, but the Citizens would be unlikely to chase his signature for several weeks if they did not believe he would be open to the switch.

When the rumors about Manchester City being interested in West Bromwich Albion captain Jonny Evans first came out, we all thought it was hilarious and amusing but there was no way this was true. Evans, however, could be a valuable addition to the first-team setup at Etihad.

City were often caught short in that area last season, with just three senior centre halves in Nicolas Otamendi, John Stones and Vincent Kompany.

The situation, though, may not even go to that, with West Brom swiftly rejecting City's £18 million bid for the Manchester United academy graduate. It was a lower priority with the need for new full-backs crucial after they allowed their four alternatives to leave the club.

Twelve months ago, Arsenal showed an interest in signing Evans but West Brom rejected the approach for their captain.

Eliaquim Mangala is not in favour at City, and has been linked with Inter Milan.
