China to implement United Nations sanctions on North Korea

The UN Security Council unanimously passed a resolution on August 6 banning North Korea's exports of coal, iron, iron ore, lead, lead ore and seafood, in a bid to choke off a third of Pyongyang's US$3 billion (RM12.8 billion) annual export revenue.

The Commerce Ministry announced a ban on imports of iron ore, iron, lead and coal from North Korea effective Tuesday - although China will continue to clear goods that have already arrived in port until September 5.

In an editorial, the state-owned China Daily newspaper said Trump was asking too much of China over North Korea.

President Donald Trump slammed Democrats for their failed trade deals, calling them the worst in "world history" in a Monday morning tweet.

The latest sanctions are meant to block exports valued at more than $US1 billion ($A1.3 billion) - a significant loss to total exports valued at $US3 billion a year ago. Now, North Korea is going to have to do without Chinese trade, as China has refused to accept key imports in line with the United Nations' latest sanctions.

Imports were up an annual 60.3 per cent at 1.34 million tonnes worth an estimated US$68 million in the January-June period.

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said that Kong had taken over from previous envoy Wu Dawei, but that there was no connection between the appointment and the current situation on the Korean peninsula. "There will be no victor, and everybody will lose", Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hua Chunying told reporters yesterday, urging dialogue and consultation as the way to resolve differences.

Tension on the Korean peninsula eased slightly on Monday as South Korea's president said resolving the North's nuclear ambitions must be done peacefully and key US officials played down the risk of an imminent war. Japan has deployed Patriot missile defences in four prefectures in response.

Trump's memorandum comes as his administration also seeks cooperation with Chinese President Xi Jinping on North Korea's ongoing missile threats.

South Korean President Moon Jae-In, a left-leaning leader who has previously advocated dialogue with the North, joined the appeals for restraint today.

Shortly after Trump signed the directive, Lighthizer said his office will launch a probe into China's handling of intellectual property.

But its proposal for North Korea to suspend its arms programs in return for the United States to halt military drills in the region has been ignored.
