Wimbledon 2017: Top seed Angelique Kerber battles back to beat Shelby Rogers

Last year's runner-up will face the 2015 finalist - with both losing to Serena Williams - in a bid to reach the quarter-finals in 2017 in what will undoubtedly be one the most eagerly anticipated clashes in the last-16. Switzerland's Bacsinszky required treatment on a thigh problem prior to the final set, and was evidently struggling as she lost 3-6, 6-4, 6-1.

With her forehand starting to prove a particularly potent weapon, Kerber duly dominated the second-set tie-break, levelling the match at the second time of asking despite having to delay her serve due to the unwelcome attentions of a wasp.

"I was down 2-4, and I think I had break point also against me 2-5", Kerber said afterward.

Muguruza, runner-up at Wimbledon two years ago, is yet to drop a set in her run to the fourth round.

The Spanish 14th seed took just over an hour to record a 6-2, 6-2 win against Romanian Cirstea, who was Bethanie Mattek-Sands' second-round opponent when the American suffered her horrific knee injury.

The third-round match was suspended Friday by darkness after 2 hours, 54 minutes with Querrey leading 6-5 in the fifth set.

Root said: "I wouldn't have taken the job on if I didn't think I was capable of doing it and capable of taking the side forward". Alastair Cook He's back in the ranks, which can be a problem for some former captains, but not for Cook, given his character.

Querrey and Tsonga's match was called off at 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (7/5), 1-6, 6-5, with the French 12th seed not wanting to serve as the light faded, though Querrey was happy to receive. During that breakthrough season, Kerber won her first two major titles, at the Australian Open and U.S. Open.

"But I think it's a completely different match than the last three matches I had here".

Venus Williams lost in the semifinals past year and is playing at the tournament for the 20th time.

"It was for sure a really important win for me today, especially because it was a really up-and-down match", Kerber said. "Every time I start the grass season, I'm like, 'How the hell did I reach that final?'", the 2016 French Open victor said.

Vandeweghe, considered by some as a dark horse for the title, beat Alison Riske 6-2, 6-4. "I expected a lot of tricky shots from her and a lot of entertaining rallies", said the Polish ninth seed.

Croatia's Martic is the last qualifier still going after beating Zarina Diyas 7-6 (6), 6-1.
