Trump Says Chicago Crime and Killings Have Reached 'Epidemic Proportions'

President Trump said Friday that he's sending "federal help" to Chicago to deal with the city's spate of gun violence.

On Thursday, authorities confirmed that around 20 additional Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives agents had been dispatched to the city.

Chicago Police officials say the strike force will be a specialized team of city cops, federal agents and IL state troopers who will work exclusively on stemming the flow of illegally possessed guns and targeting repeat gun offenders. As of Thursday, 320 murders had been committed in Chicago this year, two less than at this same point in 2016.

On January 24, 2017-just days after his inauguration-Trump addressed the "carnage" in Chicago, pledging to "send in the feds" if local leaders could not stem the tide of violence.

Trump has tweeted about Chicago in the past, in January he said, "If Chicago doesn't fix the frightful "carnage" going on, 228 shootings in 2017 with 42 killings (up 24% from 2016), I will send in the Feds!".

"But the progress CPD (Chicago Police Department) has made this year has happened without any of the new resources from the federal government we requested".

The additional agents follow the announcement Monday that the ATF had deployed a high-tech van in Chicago that can immediately test guns and shell casings at crime scenes throughout the city.

Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson said in a statement that law enforcement is "foundationally changing the way we fight crime in Chicago", according to the AP. Murders are way, way too high.

Trump, according to Conway, has discussed the issue with Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, however. So-called "sanctuary" policies tie the hands of law enforcement by rejecting common sense and undermining federal laws that would remove criminal, illegal aliens from the streets and remove them from this country.

The team will include an additional 20 ATF agents, who arrived in early June, according to a city official, as well as Chicago police officers, IL state troopers, intelligence analysts and state and federal prosecutors.

The Justice Department spokesman said the department will keep working with cities including Chicago under the new crime-fighting program, called the Public Safety Partnership.
