Hospital: China's Nobel Peace laureate's ill health worsens

The Chinese hospital where Liu is a patient said in a statement Saturday "the American and German experts fully endorsed the treatment proposal and measures undertaken" by his Chinese doctors and stated it would be unsafe for Liu to be transferred. The dispute is likely to increase concerns about his plight.

China allowed the two doctors to travel to the northeastern city of Shenyang to see the country's most prominent political prisoner following global criticism of Beijing's handling of Liu's illness and calls for him to be treated overseas.

Taiwan's government has expressed its willingness to "provide possible assistance" to Liu and his family after a DPP lawmaker and others urged China to allow Liu to come to Taiwan to receive medical treatment, saying the island is ready to welcome the ailing human rights activist.

"Liu Xiaobo and his family have requested that the remainder of his care be provided in Germany or the United States", said Dr. Joseph M. Herman of the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center and Dr. Markus Büchler of the University of Heidelberg, in a joint statement.

Chinese state media has carried a series of stories about the medical care Mr Liu is receiving, and last week reported an "expert" from Beijing's Peking Union hospital who had trained in Australia had joined the medical team in Liaoning.

"The patient is suffering from advanced liver cancer that has metastasised to his entire body and is at the end stage", the hospital said.

If his liver function improves, doctors could consider immunotherapy, but for now, Mr Liu will continue supportive therapy to alleviate the pain and "elevate his quality of life", the hospital added.

He had been serving an 11-year prison sentence for "inciting subversion of state power" in Jinzhou, near Shenyang.

American officials on Sunday reiterated calls to allow Mr. Liu, who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2010 for his human rights advocacy, to seek care overseas.

United Nations member countries approve global nuclear treaty
Netherlands, the only NATO member state to participate in the proceedings, voted against the treaty while Singapore abstained. All humanity expects that nuclear-armed States join the treaty "sooner than later", but "I have no dates", she said.

Shang Baojun, Liu's former lawyer and a close friend, said that during the consultation with the foreign experts, Liu was "clear-headed and communicated smoothly, and could even speak English".

Mr. Shang said he was not sure why Mr. Liu preferred Germany, but that seemed to be the first preference of his wife, Liu Xia, who is under house arrest.

Mr Patrick Poon, a China researcher from Amnesty International, said Beijing had never wanted to grant Mr Liu's wish to travel overseas for treatment.

"If President Xi now decides he wants to keep Liu Xiaobo in China and silenced he will have to do so in the full view of the world knowing he is intentionally hastening his death".

Meanwhile, Hong Kong-based FactWire News Agency reported on Sunday that in a previously unreleased interview in February 2009, Liu's wife Liu Xia said Liu Xiaobo had not thought he would be arrested for drafting Charter 08, a manifesto calling for political reforms in China.

Friends and fellow activists have intensified their campaign to pressure authorities to release Mr Liu in recent days.

The United Nations human rights office demanded on Friday that the UN be given access to Liu.

China's Foreign Ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment on whether Mr Liu would be allowed to leave.
