Everything lining up right for next month's total solar eclipse

The evening will begin with a presentation given by Dan Everly, President of the Lowe-Volk Astronomy Club and Night Sky Coordinator for the Warren Rupp Observatory, explaining safety tips for the solar eclipse on Monday, August 21.

In the Chippewa Valley, there will be a partial eclipse, where the movement of the moon blocks most of the sun. It will be the first total eclipse in the lower 48 states in 38 years.

The Aug. 21 eclipse will include a narrow band of total eclipse angling across the United States from OR on the west, through southern IL and Kentucky in the Midwest to SC in the east. "And our particular country, it's of interest because we haven't had one in the contiguous USA since 1979". It's no wonder, since the next time a total solar eclipse will be visible in the United States will be April 8, 2024, and it won't be almost as close. More than 250 million Americans live within 600 miles of the solar eclipse path, which will undoubtedly lead to many late-season trips to do some skyward gazing. Those in the path of totality will witness the moon completely blocking the sun and those outside of it will see a partial eclipse. He's cautioning people making the trip to Nebraska or Missouri to watch a total eclipse to be ready for spotty cell phone coverage, and to be self-sufficient that day. In South Carolina, you can view the eclipse in Greenville, Columbia, or Charleston. The only way to safely view the eclipse directly is through the use of special filters, either in the form of eclipse glasses or specific telescope filters.

No matter how dark they are or what their UV rating is, normal sunglasses will not be enough to protect your eyes as you look directly at the Sun.

The original subscription fee was stopped after Facebook bought the company for £11.4 billion in 2016. Interestingly WhatsApp has grown more than two folds after it was acquired by Facebook in 2014.

It's still a few weeks away, but area astronomers are busy preparing for the moon to blot out the sun. He says eye protection is needed to view an eclipse to prevent permanent eye damage.

Katherine is a teacher and the granddaughter of Katherine Johnson, one of the women portrayed in the movie "Hidden Figures", so science is a big deal to her and dozens of other educators at NASA's Solar Eclipse Workshop.

The program will take place at 7:30 p.m.in the Radcliffe Children's Wing of the Perrot Memorial Library, 90 Sound Beach Ave.

If obtaining eclipse glasses is not an option, a simple pin-hole camera can be constructed, to project an image of the eclipse onto the ground or a wall.
