E-cigarette use may increase smoking cessation in US

Most devices heat a liquid nicotine solution into vapour and were promoted to smokers as a less unsafe alternative since they don't contain all the chemicals, tar or odour of regular cigarettes. "The overall population cessation rate for 2014-15 was significantly higher than that for 2010-11, 5.6% v 4.5% (1.1%, 0.6% to 1.5%), and higher than those for all other survey years (range 4.3-4.5%)." reported the researchers.

Cessation rate was defined as the percentage of those who had quit for at least three months, who had been smoking for at least 12 months.

"Further research is required to discover how experimentation with e-cigarettes might influence attitudes to smoking in young people traditionally at lower risk of becoming smokers; and importantly how many of this group who do experiment with cigarettes go on to smoke regularly".

"From 2014 to 2015, more e-cigarette users tried to quit cigarette smoking and succeeded in quitting than those who didn't use e-cigarettes", said lead researcher Shu-Hong Zhu, director of the university's Center for Research and Intervention in Tobacco Control.

Lawmakers in several places - including Texas, Maine, Michigan and Nebraska - have taken steps to raise the minimum age for buying conventional tobacco products and e-cigarettes. Moreover, they do not contain the harmful, cancer-causing chemicals found in traditional cigarettes.

"People should be open to consider e-cigarettes as a way to help them quit, especially if they have used everything else in the past", Zhu said.

A lot of astronomy buffs are downplaying the partial solar eclipse in a bid to try to encourage people to go see the real deal. Especially fanatical groups have even chartered a plane to fly alongside the path of totality to extend their viewing time.

Whilst this report used the largest representative sample of smokers and e-cigarette users available to date, it still has some weaknesses. The latest research done in the USA has looked into the habits of people who do use them and found out that they played a bit role in helping them quit.

A study published Wednesday in The BMJ journal found that about two-thirds of e-cigarette smokers tried to quit smoking.

According to Action on Smoking and Health, over half (52 per cent) of e-cigarette users are now ex-smokers. This supports the thesis that less strict control over e-cigarettes would be positive.

Vapers typically wait longer to start using their e-cigs after waking up, a study found. It used surveys, which don't tend to offer the most detailed information, such as the type of e-cig used. FDA-approved pharmacotherapies for smoking cessation include: bupropion SR, nicotine gum, nicotine inhaler, nicotine nasal spray, and the nicotine patch.

Vaping is helping people quit smoking. This is the first statistically significant increase observed in population smoking cessation among U.S. adults in the past 15 years. "But if those don't work - try an e-cigarette".
