Turmoil in Tories over DUP link-up

Scottish Tory leader Ruth Davidson has warned Theresa May that the party must tone down the hardline approach to Brexit after the election setback.

Mr Fraser said having a larger group of MPs in Westminster would "make a huge difference" to the influence of the Scottish Conservatives on issues including Brexit.

"Folk might remember I fought a leadership election on the other side of that particular argument", she added.

Ms Davidson has said she has received assurances from the Prime Minister over gay rights should the Tories do a deal with the Democratic Unionist Party, and has urged Mrs May to put the economy first by pursuing an "open" Brexit.

Alan Cochrane, the Telegraph journalist who wrote the story, said on Saturday that it was "impeccably sourced" and he stands by every word.

Asked if Scottish Tories would push for a softer line on Brexit, he said: "I think we can have a tremendous amount of leverage".

Many commentators focused on the DUP vetoing the introduction of same-sex marriage in Northern Ireland in 2015, in opposition to the rest of the United Kingdom, and in stark contrast to this country which voted in favour of same-sex marriage in a referendum.

Conservative sources said they would not withdraw from the ECHR but would seek opt-outs called "derogations" from certain aspects. Spending squeeze'I'm deeply concerned about the impact of the further police cuts that the Conservatives have already outlined'.

"But just as the SNP must listen to the result on the independence referendum, we also have to listen to voters who did not give the UK Conservative Party the mandate we sought".

He also said Ms Davidson was "absolutely not" interested in a move to Westminster despite being tipped as a future leader of the United Kingdom party, insisting that she was "totally focused" on becoming First Minister of Scotland in 2021.

She tried to justify her position by claiming she knows "plenty" of gay people who don't want to get married, and said it's all become a "storm in a teacup".

"They've vetoed same-sex marriage in Northern Ireland five times".

Ms Davidson said: "I was fairly straightforward with her and I told her that there were a number of things that count to me more than party".

Carmichael, who was chair of parliament's education committee and a vocal proponent of soft Brexit, also feared how a rightwing coalition would impact on European Union talks.

'One of them is country, one of the others is LGBTI rights and I asked for a categoric assurance that if any deal was done with the DUP there would be absolutely no rescinding of LGBTI rights in the rest of the United Kingdom and that we would try to use any influence that we had to advance LGBTI rights in Northern Ireland.
