Sony Will Press its First Vinyl Records in in 30 Years

Sony Music Entertainment Japan has plans to start manufacturing vinyl at its in-house production facility by March next year.

Official figures showed vinyl sales were worth £2.4 million in the United Kingdom, compared to the $2.1m amassed from digital downloads.

Traditional LPs are now so popular that they account for 15 per cent of the record industry's income from physical album sales.

Japan was the world's second-biggest recorded music territory overall, generating $2.8bn for labels and artists - up 1.1% on 2015.

Major music market Japan produced almost 200 million records a year in the mid-seventies, according to the country's recording industry association. Sony were a leader in the development of CDs which are now growing increasingly obsolete owing to the popularity of downloads and streaming. The company says it's installing record-cutting equipment and enlisting the help of older engineers who know how to reproduce the best sound.

Years of double-digit growth in record sales have left vinyl press plants in the U.S., Japan and elsewhere struggling to meet demand.

In 1929, the American Record corporation-the company that, after a long chain of mergers and acquisitions, would eventually become Sony Music Entertainment-put out its first record.

'People might say that vinyl is not a ideal sound but actually it is a warmer sound, and all those scratches can make your copy unique.
