Republican health bill: Democrats pledge Senate standstill over secrecy

Jim Inhofe, R-Okla., and comes with ticket prices ranging from $250 to $2,500. But it is not yet clear how or whether he can get the 50 votes he will need to pass the bill.

Senate Republicans have said they have no plans to publicly release the draft health care bill.

Collins isn't a member of the Senate "working group", but the Maine Republican is pivotal player in the health care debate - and a critical vote for leadership to win over.

The strategy is a 180-degree shift from the Republican position during the 2009-2010 debate on Barack Obama's health care reforms, when the party demanded transparency at every step of the extended process. Asked to comment, a spokesman for Republican Majority leader Mitch McConnell said only that the Senate meant to vote on nominees for Trump administration positions in the coming days.

If the Senate's version of Trumpcare resembles the one passed by the House last month, it could pose a significant threat to women's health.

The White House press secretary, Sean Spicer, said he did not know whether legislative staff had been briefed on the Senate healthcare bill. He also said that the philosophy of you don't get it if you can't pay for it will not happen with the people and they are going to insure everybody. The CBO estimated that the caps would put more of the financial burden for the program on states, who would respond by a combination of cutting payments to health care providers like doctors and hospitals, eliminating benefits for patients and restricting eligibility.

Senate Democrats have announced that they will deploy a series of tactics to grind their chamber to a halt in order to draw media attention to the GOP legislation to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act (ACA).

Most think Trump doesn't respect democratic traditions
Health care remains Trump's worst issue in the poll, with 66 percent disapproving of his handling of the issue. This is the first time President Trump has hit the 50 percent in the Rasmussen survey since April 17.

Richard Blumenthal is holding what he's calling "an emergency field hearing" on the ramifications of a potential overhaul of the federal Affordable Care Act.

The events are set for July 29, what is scheduled to be the first day of the congressional summer recess, and organizers are hoping the "Our Lives on the Line" protests - including a flagship rally in Washington - will set the tone for several weeks of aggressive activism to persuade key lawmakers to back off their repeal efforts.

They include Dean Heller of Nevada and Jeff Flake of Arizona, both up for re-election next year, as well as Rob Portman of Ohio, Shelley Moore Capito of West Virginia, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Cory Gardner of Colorado and Bill Cassidy of Louisiana.

It's unclear exactly how close Senate Republicans are to finalizing their healthcare bill, which they are looking to pass with zero Democratic support.

"I can't think of another piece of legislation of this scope and magnitude that affects so many people that has been drawn up behind such a dense veil of secrecy", Baker told the Los Angeles Times.

Now that Senate Republicans have removed the town hall from the resistance's arsenal, activists are brainstorming ways to build other weapons. Democrats plan to speak until at least midnight to raise awareness of what Republicans would prefer to do in the dark of night.
