Rahal takes Detroit IndyCar race, Scott second

Scott Dixon has moved back to the top of the IndyCar series standings after finishing second in the Detroit Grand Prix.

The victory was Graham Rahal's first of the season and made him the seventh IndyCar driver to reach Victory Lane this season.

The 28-year-old Rahal, son of racing legend Bobby Rahal, led 55 out of 70 laps to win the first Dual in Detroit at the Grand Prix on Belle Isle Saturday afternoon.

The Chip Ganassi Racing driver had limited his laps during practice in order to rest his ankle as much as possible, but came through from sixth on the grid to finish as Graham Rahal's closest challenger, but even he had nothing for the eventual race victor.

Hinchcliffe was third for Schmidt Peterson Motorsports, giving Honda the top three places in the race in the shadows of General Motors' world headquarters. Indy 500 victor Takuma Sato was also undone by strategy, finishing eighth, while recent Indy Lights champions Ed Jones and Spencer Pigot rounded out the top 10.

All 22 cars return for the second race of the weekend on Sunday.

Dixon, the Indy 500 pole victor, didn't miss a beat despite a small fracture in his foot. Larson has won three times in six races this season. Charlie Kimball couldn't avoid a slowing Conor Daly on the backstretch, and the contact that followed broke a piece of Kimball's vehicle.

"Everything went according to plan today", said Rahal, who started from the pole position after capturing the Verizon P1 Award with a track-record lap this morning.

Helio Castroneves, who shared the front row with Rahal after his pole run was erased by IndyCar officials for not slowing enough under caution during qualifying, led 11 laps but abandoned a two-stop strategy and faded to seventh at the finish. The rescue crew got the auto righted so quickly he didn't lose a lap to the leaders. It was Rahal's first such honor since 2009, a span of 134 races.

IndyCar will conclude its only doubleheader of races Sunday on Belle Isle.
