Neill Blomkamp Makes Sci-Fi Shorts in Oats Studios Trailer

Making his feature film debut with District 9, South African-Canadian director Neill Blomkamp's 2009 tale of humanoid space prawns living among us became an immediate critical and commercial success.

The teaser gives us shots of an overgrown Eiffel Tower; some seriously creepy, lizard-like aliens; what looked like some Vietnam-era zombie soldiers; and in general, a pretty freakish and grim future for humanity at large - done in the style of the short films that Blomkamp made his name with before landing District 9.

Blomkamp, the director behind District 9 and Elysium, has been teasing his experimental project on social media for a while now. The idea has been percolating along beneath the surface for some time, but Blomkamp recently released the first teaser trailer for Oats Studio: Volume 1. The female narrator hints that the invaders came to exterminate humanity, and that the only choice is to adapt or die. These short films would be heavily monster focused, and the studio would serve as a testing ground for potential full-scale films. "The new world altered everyone".

No official release has been announced yet, but on Neill Blomkamp's Twitter he discusses possibility of releasing "Volume 1" of the Oats Studios shorts on YouTube for free, with premium extras available for a fee. The first trailer for the production company has dropped, unveiling snippets of what appear to be some pretty slick sci-fi projects. The film is coming to streaming services, with Steam being named as one of the platforms.
