British Columbia's NDP introduces motion to topple provincial gov't

British Columbia's Liberals are bracing for defeat this Thursday after 16 years in office, but they want to reform the province's campaign finance laws as a final political act.

"Let's avoid the risk of an election, let's make sure that we pass the Throne Speech, one that again was sincerely meant to garner the support of members across ideological lines in this House", she said.

The NDP and Greens have said they will topple the Liberal government Thursday on a confidence vote.

On Monday, June 26, during the first day of debate in the 41 session of the B.C. legislature, the NDP-Green Party alliance tried to force an early non-confidence vote on last week's throne speech, in order to expedite the inevitable defeat of the Liberal minority government, but failed because it required unanimous vote, which the Liberals did not grant.

"In my view, it's not appropriate for us to be debating government business until such time as the confidence has been tested", he said.

Her promise stands in stark contrast to her tenure as premier when she led a government best characterized as ideologically driven, one person, one party rule; a government that was by turns dismissive, indifferent and always arrogant.

Something that will now most likely take place Thursday.

Horgan tabled an amendment of non-confidence in Clark's throne speech Monday.

After presenting a throne speech with a couple of dozen big spending items lifted from the NDP platform, Premier Christy Clark was as upbeat as ever. "They cut services and increased costs for virtually every B.C. family", Horgan said in a statement. Rather, it is a tactical measure introduced as the government prepares to face a vote of confidence it is expected to lose. "People can't count on Christy Clark to fix the problems she created".

"I think members deserve to know, not from me but from a more authoritative source, what the rules are", he said.

"The Premier has been clear that she wants to test the confidence of the House, and that should be the first priority when the House reconvenes". "And if we are destined to play that role again as an opposition, I think we would be an effective opposition, and take that role seriously". To ignore the federal approvals of two major resource projects shows disrespect to not only Ms. Clark's B.C. Liberals Party but also to Mr. Trudeau's federal Liberals. "The road to stability and the road to being able to make sure that government, working together in this legislature, can get on with the business in this house, is to support the throne speech and ensure we can keep the business of government going on". "If we look at the government's action this is just a last ditch effort to hold on to power".
