SpaceX all set for Falcon 9/Inmarsat-5 F4 satellite launch today

Sent into flight from NASA's Kennedy Space Center, the rocket burned its way through a successful mission.

All are ready at the Florida Launch Complex, 39A (LC-39A) and the final launch preparations of the rarest of the company's active Falcon 9 launch fleet as it stands ready to launch the fourth of the Inmarsat-5 series of communications satellites.

The Falcon 9 booster is scheduled to lift off with Inmarsat-5 F4 communications satellite this Monday, May 15. According to the company, such an attempt wasn't planned for Monday's flight "due to mission requirements".

In fact the Inmarsat 5F4 satellite is so powerful that it has the potential to reach "hundreds of millions of customers" the Inmarsat CEO Rupert Pierce told Universe Today in a post launch interview. They have successfully recovered 10 booster rockets since December 2015. It is hoped that latest satellite will increase the load handling capacity and bring succor if one of the three satellites was having trouble. The Inmarsat-5 F4 (or I5F4) comes in at roughly 13,500 lbs (6,123 kg). SpaceX president Gwynne Shotwell told Reuters she hoped the company would get to a point where it was launching rockets that regularly in February. The company plans to use pad 40 at the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station primarily for commercial payloads and to reserve pad 39A at the Kennedy Space Center for the Falcon Heavy, Dragon space station resupply flights and launches of crew ferry ships being created to carry astronauts to and from the space station. The weather also looks like it won't be interfering with the much-anticipated launch of Falcon 9.
