Officer who fatally shot boy, 15, in Texas is fired

An internal review found Balch Springs Officer Roy Oliver shot and killed 15-year-old Jordan Edwards while he was sitting in the front seat of a auto driven by his brother on Saturday.

Officer Roy Oliver of the Balch Springs Police department in suburban Dallas fired at a vehicle Jordan Edwards was riding in with his two brothers and friends.

Edwards' death is one of dozens of shootings in recent years of men and women who were inside moving vehicles at the time they were shot, even after decades of urging from policing experts and reformers nationwide that departments ban officers from opening fire on moving vehicles. "I acted on them", Balch Springs Police Chief Jonathan Haber said during a press conference on Tuesday evening.

"Chief Haber said the action violated several department policies, and said county investigations continue".

Haber initially said after the shooting that Oliver fired on the vehicle when the driver backed toward officers "in an aggressive manner". Haber relayed this information, as he thought it to be true at the time, but later said he "misspoke" and, in an effort to provide information to the media and public as quickly as possible, did not follow the steps he should have before making a statement on the incident.

Hit by NASCAR penalty, Logano says team doesn't cheat
However, his vehicle failed post-race technical checks at NASCAR's R&D facility, therefore the win has been declared "encumbered". Thursday, NASCAR ruled Logano's win in the Toyota Owners 400 has been encumbered, meaning it will not count toward the playoffs.

"After Jordan's two brothers, Vidal and Kevon, along with their two friends, were forced to experience this tragedy up close as occupants of the vehicle, they were immediately treated as common criminals by other officers; manhandled, intimidated and arrested, while their brother lay dying in the front seat", a statement released by the Edwards family said. The victim's death was ruled a homicide by the Dallas County medical examiner.

The Edwards family issued a statement via attorney Lee Merrick. Edwards and the four people with him chose to leave what was becoming an unruly party as they heard gunfire and police were arriving, Merritt said, citing what witnesses had told lawyers. The department involved as has fired the officer who pulled the trigger. "The officers who extended this nightmare for those children ought to be properly reprimanded".

"Our family is working hard to deal with both the loss of our beloved Jordan and the lingering trauma it has caused our boys", it said.

The brother who was driving pulled over and tried to motion to police for help, she said. "That was exclusively on me". The TLBC will continue to work in Austin and around the state to build healthy relationships between African American and local police departments.

Jordan Edwards was 15-years-old and a freshman at Mesquite High School. Jackson said, "Their boy was brutally murdered, violently murdered in front of his brothers".
