First F1 win 'surreal', says Bottas post Russian GP triumph

However, despite the bullish talk from Bottas, Wolff remains confident that the two drivers, whom he has described before as having no baggage with one another, will remain friendly.

The 32-year-old suffered overheating problems as he chased Raikkonen in the first stint of the race and dropped back over the pit-stop period to finish 25 seconds behind the Finn and 36 behind Bottas.

It was just what the doctor ordered after Bottas' disappointing showing in Bahrain a fortnight ago where he started from pole position but was ordered to move out of Hamilton's way before finishing a distant third.

The inaugural race in 2014 was grabbed by Lewis Hamilton, who held the grip on the Russian title next year showing again the best result in winning the Russian GP. But the Ferrari driver was able to keep the Mercedes driver at bay.

The track was put under full course yellow conditions after Renault's Jolyon Palmer and Haas F1's Romain Grosjean had a coming together. The two drivers were out of the race, as was Fernando Alonso, whose awful season with McLaren continued.

McLaren's Fernando Alonso also had another race to forget, failing to start the Grand Prix after his auto suffered a power failure on the formation lap. Verstappen's Red Bull teammate Daniel Ricciardo, a common sight in the top five, retired early after his cars brakes caught fire.

"It's not every weekend that goes perfectly smoothly", said Hamilton, the victor in China who has a hard road ahead of him on Sunday to prevent Vettel increasing his seven-point advantage.

That could mean that the niceties between the rivals and even within Mercedes could soon end.

A crash further back in the field between Romain Grosjean in the Haas and Renault's Jolyon Palmer brought the safety vehicle onto the track shortly after Bottas had taken the lead.

The only blip in a near-faultless race from Bottas was a lock-up at Turn 13 on lap 38, which forced him to briefly run wide, and hurt him in the later stages of the race as Vettel closed in.

"I just don't think about it right now". But the Finn didn't break a sweat. Eventually he pulled away, got past the Felipe Massa, who he lapped, and headed straight for the chequered flag.

"All the questions and all the speculation, No. 2 driver and so on, it doesn't get to me", Bottas said. Third place on the podium went to Kimi Raikkonen. Hamilton is second with 73 points.

With Russian President Vladimir Putin looking on, Red Bull driver Verstappen claimed fifth, ahead of the Force Indias of Sergio Perez and Esteban Ocon. Or download our app from the iOS or Android app stores today.
