Beauty sleep is a real thing, research finds

Basically, the less sleep participants got, the less attractive and healthy they appeared.

Using 25 University students, some female and some male, Swedish researchers found that when participants appeared visibly exhausted they were less likely to be approached by strangers or friends.

The team, led by Dr. Tina Sundelin, asked 25 university students, who volunteered to participate in the experiment, to have two nights of flawless sleep in a row, before having their picture taken.

122 members of the public were then asked to look at the photos, giving each person pictured a rating for attractiveness, health, sleepiness and trustworthiness - and a response to the question: "How much would you like to socialise with this person in the picture?"

The more exhausted the volunteer looked, the less attractive they were rated. "A 2013 study indicated that sleep-deprived people look a bit more sad, so smiling more may further counteract the effects of looking exhausted".

The paper also noted that "although attractiveness may only be weakly related to actual health, faces that look healthy are also considered attractive".

Iraq, Algeria support extension of oil production cuts
The 5.25mn barrel decline in stocks was the largest since December and brought inventories down to the lowest level for 10 weeks. Presently, the trading of oil is close to $50, and OPEC seems to lose its capability to control prices.

The team, lead by Dr Tina Sundelin, found that strangers were good at assessing how exhausted a person was, and that they rated the sleepy set of photographs as less attractive than the photos of the same people when they were well-rested.

The team discovered that the strangers successfully identified whether subjects on photos were sleep deprived. The data also demonstrated that they were also less willing to socialise with those who had not slept well.

Findings published on Wednesday indicated people are less likely to avoid eye contact with those who show signs of sleep deprivation. After just two nights of not getting enough sleep, there were significant differences in how people were perceived, she points out. "Most people can cope just fine if they miss out on a bit of sleep now and again".

The strangers were good at judging if the person they were looking at was exhausted, and, if they were sleepy, their attractiveness score suffered. Basically, when you see someone who looks sick, the last thing you want to do is hang out with them.

However, statistics show that around 1 in 3 adults in the United States fail to get the recommended minimum of 7 hours of sleep each night.

Not like we needed another excuse for a sleep in!
