Another US Citizen Is Detained In North Korea

"A relevant institution of the DPRK detained American citizen Kim Hak Song on May 6 under a law of the DPRK on suspension of his hostile acts against it", read the North Korean announcement, as transcribed by Reuters.

According to Kim Mi-ok, Kim Hak-song had been teaching agricultural techniques at Pyongyang University for Science and Technology and did not engage in any missionary work.

In April, KCNA said Tony Kim - also known as Kim Sang Duk - was detained for "hostile acts" toward the North Korean regime.

The detainee was identified as Kim Hak-song, who was a USA professor working at the Pyongyang University of Science and Technology. Hak-song is the second United States professor at the university to have been detained. Both professors work and studied in agriculture, CNN reported.

The U.S. State Department said it is aware of the latest reported detention.

The four American citizens held in the North also include college student Otto Warmbier and Korean-American pastor Kim Dong-Chul, who received lengthy jail terms for "crimes against the state" and spying, respectively.

North Korea will be sending a delegation to a summit next week on Chinese President Xi Jinping's ambitious new Silk Road project, despite strained ties between Beijing and Pyongyang.

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson urged the United Nations Wednesday to consider new sanctions against North Korea if Kim Jun Un continued to move forward with his plans to build a nuclear missile capable of striking the USA, according to Reuters.

US officials have said all options, including a military strike, are on the table in trying to curb North Korea's nuclear ambitions.

Coalition backed on budget bank levy
Mr Bowen said his party was still dissecting the increase to the Medicare levy, which it is proposed will raise about $8 billion. Contributions and earnings will be taxed at 15 per cent rather than at marginal rates.

"In the past, Pyongyang has demanded that Washington send high-level envoys to obtain the release of USA citizens detained in North Korea".

In a May 3 interview on MSNBC, Mr. Gardner objected to President Trump meeting unconditionally with North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un.

Gardner has been one of the most ardent voices in Congress in pressing the Kim regime in North Korea to stop its missile and nuclear programs, as well as its alleged human rights violations.

The arrest is the second of an American citizen by North Korea in two weeks.

"Second, it portrays North Korea as the victim, which Pyongyang can use to counter the narrative in the global media of the North being the aggressor and the party in the wrong".

"PUST is certainly going to be in the crosshairs for - let's say special attention - by the North Korean authorities because of that book", says Madden.

Last year's party congress, the first one in more than 30 years, was a venue for Kim to reaffirm his unfettered rule.

The family and colleagues of Song were shocked about his arrest, as they said that Song actually refers North Korea as his "own country".
