Warm greetings for new International Space Station crew

The Soyuz MS-04 rocket launches from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan April 20, 2017, carrying Expedition 51 Soyuz Commander Fyodor Yurchikhin of Roscosmos and Flight Engineer Jack Fischer of NASA into orbit to begin their four and a half month mission on the International Space Station.

The spacecraft has reached low Earth orbit and is heading for the International Space Station (ISS), according to the source.

When she returns to Earth with Yurchikhin and Fischer on September 3, she will have logged 666 days in space during three missions, moving her up to eighth in the world, one spot behind Yurchikhin, who will have logged 672 days aloft over his five missions. "I am sure this will lead to scientific achievements and provide practical value for astronauts, as we will be able to have fresh dairy products on board", Russian cosmonaut and biochemist Sergey Ryazansky, who is expected to fly to the ISS as part of the next expedition, said during the same press conference.

USA astronaut Jack Fischer, 43, told his wife the journey to the International Space Station from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan was "a burrito of awesomeness smothered in awesome sauce".

They join the Expedition 51 crew, which is conducting science investigations - including one that could increase the effectiveness of chemotherapy drugs and one that could help grow fresh food in space.

Yurchikhin and Fischer's mission at the station lasts until September.

NASA's Jack Fischer and Greek-Russian Fyodor (Theodoros) Yurchikhin lifted off from the Russia-leased launch facility in Kazakhstan at 1:13 p.m. Thursday (0713GMT, 3:13 a.m. EDT). Station commander Peggy Whitson, 57, in the midst of her third long-duration mission, is due on Monday to beat the 534-day record for cumulative time spent in space by a United States astronaut.

At 57, Whitson also is the oldest woman to have been in space. The previous record of 534 days was held by astronaut Jeff Williams. Her two crewmates - Novitskiy and Pesquet - will return to Earth as planned June 2 to close out a 196-day stay in space.
