Runoff in Georgia House race could test Trump

In Utah, for example, Democratic candidate Kathryn Allen has outraised five-term Republican Rep. Jason Chaffetz by a whopping $400,000 in the heavily conservative part of the state southeast of Salt Lake City. Republicans also lost a special election in Pennsylvania that drew a lot party resources.

DuBose Porter, chairman of the Georgia Democratic Party, said the 6th District offers the ideal setting for state and national Democrats to prove their momentum heading into 2018.

That means Ossoff, a former congressional staff member, will take on Republican Karen Handel in a June runoff election. "We are changing the world and your voices are going to ring out across this state and across this country", he said late Tuesday. "With that said, I'm also called to be accepting and compassionate".

"We've got progressive people very angry and anxious about Trump's policies, and this is the only race that's on the national stage right now", Jen Cox, founder of the activist group Pave it Blue, told VOA at a rally last week.

"Dems failed in Kansas and are now failing in Georgia".

Ossoff harnessed opposition to President Donald Trump to lead an 18-candidate ballot in the typically conservative district.

The 30-year-old documentary filmmaker-turned-Democratic politician received a flood of celebrity support for his campaign, which was seen as a long-shot bid to steal a seat in the Republican-heavy suburban Georgia district.

"So tell me this, would you vote for Nancy Pelosi as leader or Speaker if the Democrats were to take the majority?" Another special election is coming up in Montana next month.

Handel, too, made sure to address her opponent's out-of-state supporters. Please support our efforts.

Austrian Bernd Wiesberger beat England's Tommy Fleetwood in a playoff on Sunday to win the Shenzhen International in China. Chappell had nearly the same distance for his approach on 18, and he landed it past the hole to set up the winning putt.

"As a strong believer in the sanctity of life, Karen Handel had to make a decision: keep quiet in the face of the liberal onslaught, or stand by her convictions", says a campaign ad shared by Right Wing Watch. There is a special election tomorrow to fill that seat, which opened after Republican Tom Price was appointed as secretary of Health and Human Services.

Swint predicts a "dogfight" during the eight-week runoff, with both parties pouring millions of dollars into the race. Republicans, by contrast, were sharply divided and split their vote among several contenders.

"There is no doubt this is already a victory for the ages", Ossoff told his supporters, praising them for a campaign that has collected more than $8.3 million, most of it from well beyond Georgia.

When asked about the impact of the President's involvement, Handel said, "I think the president is interested in what happens here". "Bring it on!" he said.

"Despite major outside money, FAKE media support and eleven Republican candidates, BIG "R" win with runoff in Georgia". "We know what is at stake here and I don't think that this is about any one person".

Trump ran historically poorly for a Republican in this district.

Liberal advocacy group MoveOn.org in a statement called Ossoff's first-place finish "a huge triumph for the Resistance and for progressives". The president barely edged Hillary Clinton here in November, falling short of a majority four years after Republican Mitt Romney got more than 60 percent of the presidential vote.

Although local factors like the unpopularity of Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback may partially explain why Democratic candidate James Thompson came much closer than expected to defeating Republican candidate Ron Estes, it doesn't fully explain just how close that race wound up being, according to an analysis by Harry Enten of FiveThirtyEight.
