The veteran coach's contract was running out after this 2016-17 campaign and the Stars did not qualify for the post-season, finished with a 34-37-11 mark and in sixth place in the Central Division.
It was not a huge surprise to see the Dallas Stars announce over the weekend that Lindy Ruff would not be back behind the bench next season.
"By no means is this a rebuild", Benn said after the Stars finished with their second-fewest points since moving from Minnesota almost 25 years ago. The dropoff from last season, when Dallas finished with 109 points and advanced to conference semifinals in the postseason, was a stark one. "We never got that good run going", Ruff said. I think Ken Hitchcock has a decent shot at that job and I think he's the kind of guy they're looking for to go in there and say, 'Guys, there's a different way we're going to have to play. "Nothing that we haven't seen in Dallas a few times before".
Lehtonen made 21 saves and finished 22-25-7 for Dallas, while Smith (1-6-1) stopped a career-high 42 shots.
Colorado Avalanche goalie Jeremy Smith (40) catches the puck as teammate defenseman Duncan Siemens (15) pushes Dallas Stars center Cody Eakin (20) during the second period of an NHL hockey game in Dallas, Saturday, April 8, 2017. Shore skated by and swatted the puck into the net.

Rookie Mikko Rantanen, who shares the club lead in goals (18) with Matt Duchene, could return after missing the last two contests with a lower-body injury. "Unfortunately, it's part of the business", Nill said.
"I want to personally thank Lindy for his commitment and professionalism over the four years that he served as our head coach in Dallas", said Stars GM Jim Nill.
Under Ruff, hired by current Stars general manager Jim Nill in 2013, the Stars went to the playoffs twice, winning one playoff series, their first since 2008. With 47 points, Colorado also clinched the NHL's worst record since the shootout was implemented in 2006-07 as it can not surpass the 52 Buffalo totaled in 2013-14.
Tyler Seguin scored the only goal in the shootout, and the Dallas Stars beat the Colorado Avalanche 4-3 on Saturday night. Colorado D Duncan Siemens and C Rocco Grimaldi were with San Antonio in the AHL, and totalled only seven games in the National Hockey League in 2016-17. No one from Colorado had flawless attendance.
The Avalanche close out season at the St. Louis Blues on Sunday.
