Pence lands in South Korea after North's failed launch

"North Korea will do well not to test his (Trump's) resolve or strength of the armed forces of the United States in this region", Pence said, noting the US president's recent decision on military action in Syria and Afghanistan.

Pence said Monday Trump was "very hopeful that China will take actions to bring about a change of policy in North Korea".

The warning in the interview came after US Vice-President Mike Pence arrived in South Korean and warned North Korea that his own country's "era of strategic patience" with Pyongyang was over.

But less than two weeks later, Pence's comments make clear that these bombings served a different objective: as warnings for North Korea.

A day earlier, deputy national security adviser K.T. MacFarland told Fox News' Chris Wallace on "Fox News Sunday" that North Korea was a problem for everybody in the region, including China - the North's strongest ally.

He reiterated United States support for South Korea, telling his host: "We are with you 100%".

The visit came after a huge military parade Saturday during which North Korea showcased apparent intercontinental ballistic missiles, and as a United States carrier group converges on the Korean peninsula.

Pyongyang is seeking to develop a long-range missile capable of hitting the U.S. mainland with a nuclear warhead, and has so far staged five nuclear tests, two of them past year.

Kim went on to clarify that the approach to the Korean peninsula of a USA aircraft carrier strike force, led by the nuclear powered USS Carl Vinson, would not be considered enough to constitute "the slightest movement".

The Sharks should also benefit from the 37-year-old's veteran leadership with 156 career playoff games entering Sunday. San Jose fired 44 shots on net in its 3-2 overtime win in the series opener, but totalled only 39 in its two losses.

Pyongyang has conducted several missile and nuclear tests in defiance of United Nations sanctions, and has said it has developed and would launch a missile that can strike the US mainland. The U.S. and South Korea also have been conducting their annual joint military exercises, a massive operation involving hundreds of thousands of troops.

A North Korean missile exploded during launch Sunday, U.S. and South Korean officials said, a high-profile failure that comes as a powerful U.S. aircraft supercarrier approaches the Korean Peninsula in a show of force.

At a White House Easter celebration, Trump was asked by a reporter if he had a message for North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, and replied: "Gotta behave".

Impoverished North Korea and the rich, democratic South are technically still at war because their 1950-53 conflict ended in a truce, not a peace treaty.

Kim In Ryong told a news conference today that U.S.

He also said the government was considering measures to respond to contingencies stemming from a potential crisis on the Korean peninsula, including floods of refugees and how to evacuate Japanese citizens from South Korea.

Pence's first trip to South Korea will carry personal meaning as well. He suggested plans to deploy a US missile defense system in South Korea were damaging its relations with China.

Pyongyang paraded two new intercontinental ballistic missile-sized canisters as well as displaying its submarine-launched ballistic missile and a land-based version of the same for the first time, according to analysts. Chinese leaders have sought a USA relationship based on the two powers respecting each other's spheres of influence and not intervening in one another's internal affairs.

The joint U.S. -South Korean military camp is just outside the 2.5-mile-wide DMZ.Pence, who had flown into South Korea yesterday, accused North Korea of "provocation:". The failed launch came a day after tens of thousands of North Korean soldiers goose-stepped in a parade through the capital of Pyongyang that featured missiles and other hardware.
