NYC taxi commission wants Uber to add in-app tipping

The city's Taxi and Limousine Commission wants Uber to require tipping as an option for all rides. He said the ride-hail giant - which has said passengers are free to tip with cash - can not expect customers to do so every time they hail Ubers.

The Independent Drivers Guild, a union-backed association that advocates for New York's Uber drivers, petitioned the commission to pursue the tip rule. Nobody's explicitly saying this is a shot at Uber, but Lyft has included tipping since 2012 and Fasten allowed tipping in 2016, so Uber's pretty clearly the only holdout.

The rule will require Uber to "conform to industry standards", according to Jim Conigliaro, Jr, founder of the Independent Drivers Guild.

The Delhi High Court on Monday restrained two taxi drivers' unions from disrupting services of cabs run under aggregators Ola and Uber in Delhi-NCR.

"Rulemaking on tipping is a first step in a larger process to bring some of the income protections provided to yellow taxi drivers to the for-hire world". This varies by city. Drivers for Uber have been agitating for years for the addition of a tipping option in the app, something rival Lyft.

South Korea test fires 800km-range missile
Seoul and Washington have maintained that Thaad will only be used to defend South Korea against Pyongyang's missile launches. Despite angry opposition from Beijing, the USA last month started to deploy the first elements of THAAD in South Korea.

Uber has never shied away from a fight with policymakers, and its sanguine response to the proposed tipping rules points toward a shift in its thinking.

Commuters are likely to face a hard time on Tuesday as a section of app-based taxi drivers has threatened to go on an one-day strike, even as autorickshaw drivers are planning to take out a protest march in front of the chief minister's residence. When asked if the company would consider expanding a tipping option to all its markets if it were required to introduce it in NY, the spokesperson declined to comment.

"At an nearly six-hour hearing on April 6, the TLC heard testimony about a decline in earnings due to fares being paid by passengers going down, increases in commission and high vehicle costs as well as confusion due to discrepancies between the passenger fare and the fare that the driver's pay comes out of", the commission said. Low pay was a common theme among drivers, as was Uber's manipulation of fare prices.

Tipping can be an important income stream for a professional driver.

"We have not seen the proposal and look forward to reviewing it", an Uber spokesperson said in a statement. The taxi commission has the authority to initiate rulemaking on its own, but rules must be certified by city legal authorities. The interface wouldn't ask you to tip immediately after a ride, but rather users would have to manually select find their last ride. It also mentioned the possibility of bias entering into the picture, meaning that riders would tip more to certain people, and less to others.
