Italy's Emma Morano, the world's oldest person, dies at 117

Emma Morano, 116, holds a pillow reading "116 years old, Happy Birthday Emma" as she poses for AFP photographer in Verbania, North Italy, on May 14, 2016.

Her mother lived to be 91, and she had several siblings who reportedly lived to be at least 100 years old.

"She had an extraordinary life, and we will always remember her strength to move forward in life", the mayor of Verbania was quoted as saying.

Ms Morano died in her home in the city of Verbinia, northern Italy, according to local media.

The world's oldest living person is now believed to be Violet Brown, a Jamaican woman born on March 10, 1900.

Ms Morano, born on November 29, 1899, had been living in a tidy, one-room apartment, where she was kept company by her caregiver and two elderly nieces. "I think I was one of the first in Italy to do that". It was a habit she picked up at the age of 20, when a doctor advised her that consuming these three daily eggs would help treat her anemia.

Her life not only spanned three centuries but also survived an abusive marriage, the loss of her only son, two World Wars and more than 90 Italian governments.

Researchers from Harvard Medical School visited her in 2014 as part of a study into immunity to diseases, the Italian news agency ANSA said. "For lunch I'll eat pasta and minced meat then for dinner, I'll have just a glass of milk".

In a study conducted by Anderson et al., it was concluded that some people get healthier the older they get.

"She was slowly fading away", Dr Bava said.

"I separated from him in 1938".

"I didn't want to be dominated by anyone", Morano told the New York Times when she was 115.
