Hawaii lawmakers criticize Sessions' island judge remarks

"A judge sitting on an island" is otherwise known as a US federal judge, and one who gave a rather lengthy explanation for his ruling that Trump's so-called "travel ban" targeting Muslim refugees violated religious protections granted by the founding documents ex-Sen. Richard Blumenthal said Friday, speaking on CNN's "New Day".

"An island in the Pacific" is otherwise known as one of the 50 states of the United States of America, though we'll all probably be cold in the ground before Obama-era Republicans admit that Hawaii is indeed an actual state. Number two: "Judges routinely issue orders that apply nationwide", said Blumenthal, a Connecticut Democrat, adding that the remark was "really weird".

Last month, Judge Derrick Watson blocked the Trump administration's 90-day ban that would have prevented travel to the USA from citizens of six Muslim-majority countries.

"I wasn't diminishing the judge or the island of Hawaii, that lovely place, give me a break", Sessions said later in response to Velshi, who asked about criticism of Sessions' remark.

The Justice Department tried to clarify Sessions' remarks on Thursday, according to CNN.

He told a conservative talk show host that "a judge sitting on an island" should not be able to stop the President exercising his "constitutional power". "Jeff Sessions' comments are ignorant and risky". Watson's chambers are in Honolulu, on the island of Oahu. "Hawaii is, in fact, an island in the Pacific - a lovely one where the Attorney General's granddaughter was born", a spokesman told the network.

The announcement was less about Woods' health and future, though, than the newest course design for his company, TGR Design. As a designer, Woods has completed two courses: Bluejack National near Houston, Texas and Diamante's El Cardonal in Mexico.

Mr Sessions said he was "amazed" Hawaii had so much power, and expected the order to be overturned. Derrick Watson is actually a federal judge who happens to serve on a district court in Hawaii.

Hawaii's Attorney General Doug Chin criticized these remarks.

"President Trump previously called a federal judge in California a so-called judge".

"Number two, judges routinely issue orders that apply nationwide so there is nothing wonderful about that except that our constitutional system is really fantastic".

Douglas Chin, Hawaii's attorney general, said in a statement it was disappointing Sessions doesn't acknowledge that the federal courts are "co-equal partners with Congress and the president".
