Australian towns evacuated amid flooding from ex-cyclone

The bull shark washed up on a flooded road near the town of Ayr, Queensland, after tropical cyclone Debbie battered northeast Australia.

Many rivers flooded, including the Logan and the Albert in south Queensland and the Wilsons and Tweed in NSW.

The floods have claimed a life, with emergency crews yesterday recovering the body of a 77-year-old Eagleby man, who went missing on Friday.

Hundreds more are expected to be added to the list. There were still about 12,500 without power last night, mostly on the Sunshine Coast.

The Archbishop of Sydney's Anglican Aid has launched an appeal for the victims of Cyclone Debbie in North Queensland. Another three people were confirmed dead on Saturday but police are still investigating whether their deaths were flood-related. Northern NSW residents are still waiting for the all clear from authorities before they can return to their homes and count the cost of the flooding.

"At that level, we would see around 5,400 properties impacted including 3,000 residential, 1,500 commercial and potentially another 900 properties", Mayor Margaret Strelow said.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) shared photos of the shark on social media, warning members of the public to stay out of flood water near the Burdekin River.

"There are still a number of communities subject to evacuation orders and in some instance people have remained in their properties and that's causing us the biggest challenge at the moment", Mark Morrow of the NSW State Emergency Service told Channel 9.

Verry said what remains of the cyclone has moved off Australia's eastern coast.

"All I could see when I looked around was the millions of dollars in damage and the huge amounts of time it will take to clean up", Mr Cobbing said.

The main areas affected in New South Wales have been around Murwillumbah and in Lismore, where flooding broke the previous records of 2001 and 2005.

The Richmond River has risen almost four metres at Woodburn, with water levels expected to peak overnight.

Ms Palaszczuk visited Mackay and the Whitsundays on Saturday to inspect the damage wrought by Cyclone Debbie.

Authorities have ordered over 20,000 people to evacuate their homes.

Torrential rain lashed heavily populated areas as the remnants of Cyclone Debbie moved down the nation's east coast.
